Sedation Dentist Near York, SC

Honest Answers Before You Book Your First Sedation Visit

What York Patients Actually Want to Know Before They Book

Most York residents who reach out about sedation dentistry have already done some research. They have looked at half a dozen websites and read the same vague language on each one. What they want before they pick up the phone are concrete answers: what the procedure feels like, what it costs, who is qualified to administer it, what the risks are, and whether driving 25 minutes to Rock Hill is worth it.

This page answers those questions directly. Dr. Klaudia Falkovsky, DMD and Dr. Andrew Falkovsky, DMD are happy to answer additional questions during a phone consultation if anything below is unclear.

What Does Sedation Dentistry Actually Feel Like?

It depends on the level. Nitrous oxide feels like a mild floating sensation; you stay alert and remember the visit. Oral conscious sedation feels like deep drowsiness; you usually do not remember much of what happened. IV sedation feels like falling asleep, except you can still respond if asked; afterward you typically have no memory of the procedure itself.

None of these are general anesthesia. You stay breathing on your own, your gag reflex stays present (though suppressed), and you can be roused if needed. The American Dental Association classifies these as minimal and moderate sedation and they are different from the general anesthesia used for surgical procedures in a hospital setting.

Who Is Sedation Dentistry For?

Sedation is appropriate for:

  • Patients with severe dental anxiety or dental phobia
  • Patients who have not been to a dentist in many years and need to catch up
  • Patients with a strong gag reflex
  • Patients with TMJ disorders that make long appointments painful
  • Patients with sensory processing differences
  • Patients facing a complex treatment plan involving multiple procedures
  • Patients who have difficulty getting fully numb with local anesthesia

Sedation is generally not appropriate without additional medical clearance for patients with severe untreated sleep apnea, certain cardiovascular conditions, or some pregnancy situations. We screen for these at the consultation.

How Much Does Sedation Dentistry Cost?

Costs vary by sedation level and by the procedures being performed under sedation. Nitrous oxide is the most affordable. Oral conscious sedation is mid-range. IV sedation is the most expensive of the three because of the monitoring and the medications involved. Insurance coverage for sedation varies plan by plan, with some plans covering it under certain medical conditions and others not covering it at all.

We provide a written estimate before any treatment begins so you know what to expect. We accept many traditional PPO dental insurance plans, offer a Friends & Family Plan for uninsured patients, and provide financing through CareCredit for larger treatment plans.

Is Sedation Dentistry Safe?

Yes, when administered by a trained dentist with appropriate monitoring. The American Dental Association maintains specific training and permitting requirements for each level of sedation, and these were updated most recently in 2025 to reflect current evidence-based national standards. Dentists administering moderate sedation in South Carolina must hold a sedation permit from the South Carolina State Board of Dentistry.

All sedation visits at Falko Family Dental include continuous monitoring. For nitrous oxide we monitor responsiveness and breathing. For oral and IV sedation we add pulse oximetry, blood pressure monitoring, and (for IV) cardiac monitoring. We screen all patients for the medical conditions that change sedation risk before we proceed.

Will I Feel Pain Under Sedation?

Sedation and pain control are separate. Sedation manages your awareness and anxiety. Local anesthesia (the numbing injection) is what actually blocks pain. We use both together: sedation to keep you comfortable mentally, local to keep you comfortable physically. The combination is highly effective. Most sedation patients report no memory of pain during the procedure.

What Procedures Can Be Done Under Sedation?

At our office, sedation is regularly used for:

  • Routine cleanings and exams (for severely anxious patients)
  • Deep cleanings (scaling and root planing) for periodontal disease
  • Fillings (single or multiple)
  • Crowns and bridges
  • Root canal therapy
  • Tooth extractions, including wisdom teeth
  • Dental implants
  • Multiple combined procedures in a single longer visit

Do I Need a Referral?

No. You can call our office directly to schedule a sedation consultation.

What Should I Bring to the Consultation?

  • A list of all current medications, including supplements
  • Your medical history, including cardiovascular issues, sleep apnea diagnosis, or any prior reactions to anesthesia or sedation
  • Your physician's contact information if you have ongoing medical conditions
  • Insurance information, if applicable
  • Any questions you want answered before you decide whether to proceed

How Long Will the Sedation Take to Wear Off?

Nitrous oxide wears off within five to ten minutes. Oral conscious sedation wears off over four to eight hours, with most patients sleeping a long stretch in the afternoon. IV sedation effects last several hours, with full clear-headedness usually returning by the next morning. You will need a driver for oral and IV sedation. You can drive yourself after nitrous oxide alone.

Why Drive From York to Rock Hill for This?

Honest answer: only if it is worth it for you. The drive from downtown York to our office at 1251 Ebenezer Rd is approximately 25 to 30 minutes via SC-5 / Black Street and US-21 S. That is meaningful drive time and we understand that some York patients prefer to stay closer to home. The reasons people make the drive are usually one of three: they want a husband and wife dentist team that handles both sides of complex restorative work in one office, they want a sedation dentist who has worked with long-absent patients before without lecturing them, or they have specific procedures (implants, multiple combined treatments) that they want done under sedation in fewer visits.

Meet Your Sedation Dentists

Falko Family Dental is a husband and wife practice run by Dr. Klaudia Falkovsky, DMD and Dr. Andrew Falkovsky, DMD. Both doctors handle sedation cases.

Dr. Klaudia Falkovsky, DMD

Dr. Klaudia earned her DMD from Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. Before dental school, she completed a Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, where she contributed to oral biology research that produced two peer-reviewed publications: one in Nature and one in Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy.

Her path into healthcare started in high school. As a senior at Health Professions High School, she trained as an emergency medical technician (EMT), responding to live calls and learning patient monitoring, airway support, and emergency response. Those fundamentals are the same ones used to monitor a sedated dental patient today: heart rate, breathing, oxygenation, and response to change.

In dental school, Dr. Klaudia was inducted into the Gamma Pi Delta Prosthodontic Honor Society, was a member of the Aesthetic Dental Society, received the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (ICOI) award, and was a three-time recipient of the Michael J. Kosloski Foundation scholarship. Her community work included annual oral cancer walks and screenings, the Brush Up Newark school program teaching children about oral health, and a VIDA dental mission providing care in remote areas of Costa Rica.

Dr. Klaudia is a member of the South Carolina Dental Association (SCDA), International Congress of Oral Implantologists (ICOI), Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), and American Dental Association (ADA).

Outside the office, Dr. Klaudia hikes, camps, and snowboards with her husband Dr. Andrew and their son Jacob.

Dr. Andrew Falkovsky, DMD

Dr. Andrew is a member of the South Carolina Dental Association (SCDA), American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), and American Dental Association (ADA).

Sedation Dentist in York SC Office Tour

About York, SC

York is the county seat of York County, South Carolina, with a historic downtown and a slower pace than the Rock Hill / Fort Mill side of the county. Many York patients we see are long-term residents who have used local dentists their entire lives and are now seeking a sedation provider for specific reasons (typically a complex implant case, severe anxiety after a bad past experience, or accumulated avoidance over many years). We are not the closest sedation dentist for everyone in York, but we are a strong fit for patients who want a small husband-and-wife practice and have specific sedation needs.

Insurance and Payment

We are in network with many traditional PPO dental insurance plans. Sedation coverage varies by plan. Some plans cover sedation only when paired with a specific medical-necessity diagnosis, others do not cover it at all. We verify your specific benefits before treatment begins and give you a written estimate so there are no surprises about what insurance pays and what you owe.

For patients without dental insurance, our Friends & Family Plan covers preventive care and provides discounts on additional treatment. For larger treatment plans, CareCredit financing is available with interest-free options for shorter terms.

For York patients in particular, we know the drive itself is part of the cost calculation. If you are weighing whether a longer drive plus sedation is worth it, ask us at the consultation for a written treatment plan with itemized costs before you commit to anything. We do not require a deposit at the consultation. You are free to take the plan home, think about it, and call back when you have decided.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I eat or drink before my sedation appointment?

For nitrous oxide alone, yes. A light meal is fine. For oral conscious sedation or IV sedation, you will need to fast for several hours beforehand. We send written pre-operative instructions when we schedule the visit.

How early should I arrive on the day of my appointment?

For nitrous visits, 10 to 15 minutes early. For oral conscious or IV sedation, plan to arrive 30 minutes early so we can review your medical history one more time, take baseline readings, and start any pre-medications calmly.

Can a family member come with me into the room?

For the consultation, yes. For the procedure itself, a support person can usually be in the operatory at the start and during recovery. Some patients want a family member present throughout the visit while others prefer to be alone with the team. Tell us what you prefer and we will accommodate.

Will I remember the procedure afterward?

Probably not, depending on the level you choose. Nitrous oxide leaves your memory mostly intact. Oral conscious sedation tends to leave fragmented or no memory of the appointment. IV sedation has the strongest amnesic effect and most patients have no memory of the procedure itself.

What if my health condition makes me a poor sedation candidate?

We screen at the consultation. Some conditions (severe untreated sleep apnea, certain heart conditions, late-stage pregnancy) require either a more conservative sedation approach, medical clearance from your physician, or occasionally a hospital-based setting. Bring your medication list and any specialist's contact information so we can plan accurately.

How quickly can I get back to normal activities?

After nitrous oxide, immediately. After oral conscious sedation, plan to rest for the rest of the day; most patients are fully clear-headed by the next morning. After IV sedation, plan a full quiet day of rest. Avoid driving, working, or making important decisions for 24 hours.
