Nitrous Laughing Gas

Also known as laughing gas, Nitrous is beneficial in calming a patient's anxiety before a procedure. It is a sweet-smelling, non-irritating, colorless gas that you can breathe.

It is used primarily for its anesthetic and analgesic properties. It is a safe and effective gas that is inhaled by the patient. It is the most commonly used sedation technique in dentistry. Learn more about Nitrous Oxide sedation.

There are many advantages to using Nitrous.

  • The depth of sedation can be altered at any time to increase or decrease sedation.
  • There is no after effect such as a "hangover".
  • Inhalation sedation is safe with no side effects on your heart and lungs, etc.
  • Inhalation sedation is very effective in minimizing gagging.
  • It works rapidly as it reaches the brain within 20 seconds. In as little as 2-3 minutes, its relaxation and pain-killing properties develop.

IV Sedation

Comprehensive Conscious IV Sedation (moderate)

Conscious IV Sedation is also known as "twilight sleep". We are specialty trained to offer this type of sedation. It is particularly good for patients with strong gag reflexes, high dental anxiety or for those patients requiring multi-visit procedures that would prefer for the work to be done in one visit. IV Sedation is also used in most oral surgery procedures and requires more planning on the patient and doctor's part. The patient will be groggy after the procedure and as such, will need a friend or family member to drive them home as well as monitor them for the next few hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What's the difference between nitrous oxide and IV sedation?

A: Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is a mild, fast-acting sedation delivered through a nose mask. You stay fully awake and aware, feel calm and relaxed, and can drive yourself home right after — the gas clears your system within minutes of removing the mask. It's ideal for patients with mild-to-moderate anxiety or shorter procedures. IV sedation, sometimes called 'twilight sleep,' puts you in a much deeper state of relaxation. You're still technically conscious but will have little to no memory of the appointment. It's a better fit for significant dental anxiety, long procedures, or patients who want to get a lot of work done in one visit. You'll need a driver for IV sedation.

Q: Can I drive home after dental sedation?

A: It depends on which type of sedation you receive. Nitrous oxide wears off quickly — most patients feel completely normal within 15 minutes and can safely drive home. IV sedation and general anesthesia are a different story: you'll feel groggy for several hours afterward, so you're required to have a trusted adult drive you home and stay with you for at least a few hours. We'll review all of this with you at your consultation, but if you're planning IV sedation or general anesthesia, go ahead and arrange your ride in advance.

Q: Does dental insurance cover sedation?

A: Nitrous oxide is covered partially or fully by some insurance plans, particularly when it's used for children or complex procedures. IV sedation and general anesthesia are more often considered optional and may not be covered, though exceptions exist for qualifying medical conditions like severe dental phobia. Falko Family Dental is in-network with most major PPO plans and will verify your coverage before your appointment. If sedation isn't covered, financing options are available — sedation costs can often be rolled into your overall treatment financing.

Q: Is sedation dentistry safe?

A: Yes — when administered by trained professionals, dental sedation is very safe. Falko Family Dental is specialty trained in IV sedation and is one of the few Rock Hill practices to offer general anesthesia performed by a licensed dental anesthesiologist. Before any sedation appointment, we review your medical history, current medications, and health conditions to confirm you're a good candidate. Your vital signs are monitored throughout the procedure. If you have specific health concerns, we're happy to discuss them during your consultation.
