Why Complex Cases Almost Always Need Sedation

Long restorative appointments are physically demanding. Holding your mouth open for two hours triggers TMJ pain in most adults. Lying back that long is uncomfortable for anyone with neck or back issues. The body's stress response builds up over the appointment, raising heart rate and blood pressure. None of that is dangerous in isolation, but it is exhausting, and it shortens what we can realistically accomplish in one visit.

Sedation Options for Complex Restorative Visits

We offer three levels of dental sedation, all defined and regulated by the American Dental Association. Each requires specific dentist training and a state permit.

IV (Intravenous) Sedation

Most common choice for long restorative or surgical appointments. Sedation is delivered through a small IV line and adjusted in real time based on how you respond. You remain in a deep twilight state, breathing on your own, with constant monitoring of heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen. Most patients have little to no memory of the procedure afterward.

Oral Conscious Sedation

A pill taken about an hour before the appointment. Used for moderate cases or for patients who prefer not to have an IV. You stay awake but deeply relaxed and typically remember very little of the visit.

Nitrous Oxide

Lightest option. Used on its own for shorter visits or as an adjunct alongside oral or IV sedation. Wears off within a few minutes.

Dr. Klaudia Falkovsky, DMD

Dr. Klaudia earned her DMD from Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. Before dental school, she completed a Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, where she contributed to oral biology research that produced two peer-reviewed publications: one in Nature and one in Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy.

Her path into healthcare started in high school. As a senior at Health Professions High School, she trained as an emergency medical technician (EMT), responding to live calls and learning patient monitoring, airway support, and emergency response. Those fundamentals are the same ones used to monitor a sedated dental patient today: heart rate, breathing, oxygenation, and response to change.

In dental school, Dr. Klaudia was inducted into the Gamma Pi Delta Prosthodontic Honor Society, was a member of the Aesthetic Dental Society, received the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (ICOI) award, and was a three-time recipient of the Michael J. Kosloski Foundation scholarship. Her community work included annual oral cancer walks and screenings, the Brush Up Newark school program teaching children about oral health, and a VIDA dental mission providing care in remote areas of Costa Rica.

Dr. Klaudia is a member of the South Carolina Dental Association (SCDA), International Congress of Oral Implantologists (ICOI), Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), and American Dental Association (ADA).

Falko Family Dental is at 1251 Ebenezer Rd, Rock Hill, SC 29732. From central Tega Cay, the drive is approximately 15 to 20 minutes. The most direct route is SC-160 E to US-21 S. From the Stonecrest area or the eastern side of Tega Cay near the Lake Wylie shoreline, SC-160 connects you to Cherry Road and then directly into our area near the Ebenezer/Cherry intersection. Patients arriving for IV sedation will need a designated driver, since post-sedation discharge requires that someone you trust takes you home.

What a Long Sedation Visit Actually Looks Like

Two weeks before: pre-treatment consult, medical history review, and clear pre-op instructions including any fasting requirements.
Day of treatment: arrive with your driver. We start an IV (if applicable), establish monitoring, and begin sedation slowly.
During the procedure: continuous monitoring of heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen. Sedation level is adjusted as needed. You stay relaxed and comfortable.
Recovery: 30 to 60 minutes in a quiet recovery area until you are oriented and stable.
Discharge: written aftercare instructions for both you and your driver. Most patients sleep heavily that afternoon and are clear-headed by the next morning.

Yes. IV sedation is one of the most common choices for implant placement, especially for multiple implants or full-arch cases. It keeps you comfortable and lets us complete the surgical work efficiently.

How many procedures can be done in one sedation visit?

It depends on your treatment plan and how your body tolerates the sedation. Many patients complete 4 to 6 hours of work in one visit, which often translates to several extractions, multiple implant placements, or a combination of restorative and surgical work.

What if I have heart issues, sleep apnea, or take blood thinners?

We screen carefully for these. In some cases we adjust the sedation plan, in others we coordinate with your physician for clearance, and occasionally we recommend a hospital-based approach. Bring a current medication list to your consult.
